Health Science Internship

Health Science Internship is a one-or two credit course designed for students in Grades 11 or 12. This course includes a variety of knowledge and skills necessary for becoming a health care worker or for preparing students for postsecondary health care programs.  Health Science Internship is designed to be completed in a hospital, extended care facility, medical office, imagery laboratory, or other health care facilities.  The prerequisite for the course is Foundations of Health Science.  Theory and laboratory components comprise at least ten percent of the Health Science Internship course.

Prior to enrolling in this course students must complete Foundations of Health Science and be at least a junior.

HEALTH SCIENCE INTERNSHIP


Definition:
Health Science Internships are a structured component of the Career and Technical Education Health Science curriculum that provides a supervised experience in an approved setting. Health Science Internships are designed to be completed in a hospital, extended care facility, rehabilitation center, medical office, imaging laboratory, or other approved setting. Health Science Internship standards are identified in the Alabama Course of Study: Career and Technical Education. This course may be taught by any certified Health Science teacher or any science teacher certified by the Project Lead the Way, Biomedical Program.



Purpose/Objective: Occupational Preparation:
Health Science Internships provide an opportunity for students to gain knowledge and apply previously learned theory and skills in an actual health care setting. These experiences are uniquely designed to meet students’ career objectives through supervised experiences, which are coupled with related classroom instruction.


Prerequisites:
Successful completion of the course Foundations of Health Science or successful completion of the required coursework under Project Lead the Way, Biomedical Program is required prior to placement of a student in a Health Science Internship.




Related Instruction:
Students must be enrolled in the Health Science Internship course. The student shall participate in Health Science Internships for a maximum of three (3) days a week. Students must participate in classroom instruction a minimum of two days per week for mastery of content standards, documentation of technical skill attainment, and discussion of internship experiences.




Student Selection/Qualifications:
Health Science Internship students must:


• Be at least sixteen years of age.
• Meet the prerequisites for enrollment and have declared a Health Science career objective.
• Complete a Health Science Internship Application for Enrollment.
• Be capable of performing the tasks of the internship placement.
• Be classified as an eleventh or twelfth grader.
• Be in good academic standing and have an acceptable discipline record as determined by the Health Science teacher.




Roles and Responsibilities:
Health Science Internships require time, commitment, collaboration of the following partners:


• Students must arrive at the internship site at the appropriate time and in the appropriate dress. Students must comply with the rules and regulations of the school district, school, and internship site.


• Parents/guardians should provide ongoing support to the student and assume the responsibility for the conduct of the students. Parent/guardian must provide transportation for the student to and from the internship site.


• Health Science Teachers shall secure an appropriate internship site based on the student’s career objective. The teacher shall work with the internship site to develop a training plan for the student. The teacher will visit the internship site at least once per week to confer with the Healthcare Mentor. The teacher shall meet with the student regarding his/her job progress, behavior, attitude, academics, etc. and is responsible for the student’s final grade for the Health Science Internship. The teacher is also responsible for reinforcing internship site experiences with related classroom instruction.


• Healthcare Mentors shall provide opportunities and placements for students to apply previously learned theory and skills in healthcare settings. Healthcare mentors are responsible for evaluating the student’s performance each grading period, ensuring that students meet minimum work hours as outlined in the Training Plan, and providing a safe environment.




Appropriate Placement:
All Internship placements must relate to the student’s career objective and must also meet all federal and state Child Labor Laws.




Credits Earned:
The Health Science Internship is a one-or two-credit course. Content Standards 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 constitute the content required for one credit. Inclusion of standards 2, 7, 8, 10, and 11 will incorporate the second credit.




Hour Requirements:
Students must successfully complete 140 hours that combine class instruction and healthcare field experience per credit earned.



Supervision/Coordination Requirements:
The Health Science teacher must visit the training site at least once per week to confer with students and the Healthcare Mentor.

Placement Restrictions or Limitations:
Students not be trained by an immediate family member and may not participate in a hazardous occupation as defined by Alabama and Federal Child Labor Law. Students shall be rotated to a different experience or site once the student objectives indicated in the Training Plan have been mastered.


Required Documentation and Forms:
The following documentation or forms must be completed and on file with the Health Science instructor for each part student enrolling or participating in the Health Science Internship Experiences:

• Interest/Aptitude Inventory



After Student Selection:
• Proof of Insurance
• School/LEA Clinical Regulations and Policies (To be established and approved by the LEA)


Upon Placement of Student:
• Health Science Internship Training Agreement and Training Plan
• Internship Site Visit Summary
• Health Science Weekly Hour Report
• Internship Evaluation Report (1 per grading period)
• Other Forms/Documents as required by the Local Education Agency


Upon Completion of Internship Experience:
• Student Evaluation of Internship site Student Follow-up Form


NOTE: These documents must be kept on file a minimum of 3 years.


Wages:
Health Science Internships are unpaid work experiences.



Insurance Coverage/Workers’ Compensation:
All participants in the Health Science Internships for Health Science must provide:

• Current health insurance coverage
• Current TB Skin test
• Liability Insurance
• Automobile Liability Insurance if student provides own transportation
